From Wednesday, October 24th, until Friday, October 26th, Film Events and Filmtheater Kriterion jointly present the third edition of the three-day genre film festival “Amsterdamned”.
The programme includes eleven current and classic films in the genres horror, fantasy and science fiction, most of which will not get a regular Dutch cinema release. Opening film of Amsterdamned 2018 is Dick Maas’ rarely screened first feature film RIGOR MORTIS, from 1981. Dick Maas and several members of the cast and crew, amongst whom Olga Zuiderhoek and Wim T. Schippers, will be present.
Jan Doense took the initiative for the Amsterdamned film festival in 2016, with the blessing of Dick Maas himself and the enthusiastic support of the Kriterion crew. In the Kriterion cafe, decorated for the occasion, festival visitors can get together before and after the screenings to discuss the state of affairs in genre cinema while enjoying one of the many specialty beers Kriterion has available on draft.
After Nicolas Roeg and John Boorman were put in the spotlight in earlier editions, this year Amsterdamned again honours a filmmaker who has been extremely important to genre film: Brian De Palma. The programme includes the Hitchcockian thriller BODY DOUBLE, the horror musical PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE and the re-edited psychological thriller RAISING CAIN..
From October 14th, the Kriterion cafe will display an exhibition of collages by artist Peter de Jong. De Jong likes to be inspired by the silent horror classics from the early years of film history, like DAS CABINET DES DR. CALIGARI (1920) and LONDON AFTER MIDNIGHT (1927). De Jong runs weekly ‘collage colleges’ at his studio in Ruigoord.
A small exhibition of obscure genre film posters from the collection of Wim Jansen will be displayed in Kriterion’s stairwell during Amsterdamned 2018. His new gallery The Sick Smell of Success, located at Oudezijds Achterburgwal 125 in Amsterdam, is only open on Saturdays from 11AM to 6.30PM and by appointment. Affordable, freshly prepared meals will be served daily at the Kriterion Cafe. Further information to follow.
